What is your favorite part about practicing healthcare law at McDermott?
Without question, our team. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with colleagues who are both the top experts in the field and people of the highest caliber, who deeply care about each other and who I can call good friends.
I also really enjoy the creative problem-solving aspects of the job, which comes up frequently in both my transactional and regulatory practices as well as the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to navigate complex issues for clients.
What is the biggest opportunity and greatest challenge facing clients in your area of focus today?
I generally work with healthcare providers and investors in the healthcare industry, including private equity funds, on transactional and regulatory matters. Our clients have the opportunity to be at the forefront of innovative technologies, care delivery models, and collaboration in a rapidly evolving industry where even the smallest of players can have a significant impact. From my perspective, the biggest challenge facing healthcare investors is the increasingly competitive, seller-friendly market. With only a limited number of assets available for investments, we work closely with our healthcare investor clients to develop creative value propositions for healthcare providers and founders of healthcare companies.
What kind of client work gets you most excited when it comes across your desk?
I’m always excited to work with founders of early-stage companies as they navigate the complex regulatory landscape in developing their initial business models and growing their businesses.
In my transactional practice, I really enjoy working with healthcare investors and founders to structure their businesses in a manner that supports their growth objectives, while remaining within the bounds of regulatory compliance.
What is the proudest moment of your career to date?
There are several transactional matters that have made me incredibly proud, including my first time leading a transaction through closing, my first time running a private equity transaction and numerous others. That said, I am most proud of my pro bono work during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, working closely with Legal Services of Greater Miami (LSGMI) to support small businesses and non-profit organizations in South Florida when they most needed our help. Hearing from clients we supported and whose businesses have survived the pandemic to date while being recognized with LGSMI’s Partners for Equal Justice Award made me incredibly proud.
In terms of my work within McDermott, I am proud to have been at the forefront of recruiting and training an incredibly diverse and talented group of associates to support our clients and build the future of our firm.
What is your favorite decoration in your office?
A couple of years ago, my grandmother gave me a painting by a Venezuelan artist of the El Avila mountain range in Caracas, which I could see from my window growing up and saw every day until I immigrated to the US in my late teens. The painting is a constant reminder of where I come from and who I am, and it was great to see it again when I started going back to the office after this long period working from home.
